6 Common Water Softener Problems We Fix
These cover most water softener service calls we get in Ontario. Tap a problem below — the form pre-fills and a technician calls you back shortly.

Salt bridge / not using salt
Softener salt bridge — tank looks full of salt but your water is still hard. The brine isn't dissolving so the system can't regenerate.

Water softener leaking / overflowing
Water on the floor, water softener flooding basement, soaked salt bag, water softener overflow or constant drain trickle — emergency same-day priority.

Water softener not regenerating
Hard water spots back on glasses and shower doors. Soap won't lather. The control valve isn't cycling on schedule.

Resin tank issues
Brown water, sediment in faucets, or low pressure throughout the house — resin beads are channelling or fouled.

Bypass valve stuck — can't shut off the softener
Lever won't move, pin sheared, or cracked plastic body causing a water softener bypass leak. You can't isolate the unit for service, vacation shut-off, or emergency cut-off — fix this before any other repair.

Water softener not working
System won't cycle, error code on the display, or control head clicking and stalling — usually a same-day drive motor or control board swap.
Common Water Softener Symptoms — What They Mean
Not sure what's actually wrong with your softener? Match your symptom to the likely cause below — our on-site diagnostic confirms the exact issue before any repair.
Water still hard with softener installed — soap won't lather, scale on faucets, spots on glasses.
Softener is not regenerating. Salt bridge in the brine tank, stuck control valve, broken timer, or unit stuck in bypass mode.
Water tastes salty after softener installed or after each regeneration cycle.
Brine is leaking into your soft water — usually a stuck brine valve, a faulty injector, or a clogged drain line that can't carry brine away during the rinse cycle. Resin tank may also be retaining brine if the rinse is too short.
Water feels slippery or slimy from the softener — even more than usual.
Hardness setting is too high (over-softening). Easy fix — re-program the head to match your local water test.
Softener using too much salt — bag empties every few weeks.
Brine valve stuck, drain line leak, float assembly failed, or regeneration cycling more often than needed.
Softener stopped working suddenly — no display, no cycling, system silent.
Power loss to the head, blown transformer, dead control board, or burned-out drive motor. Usually a same-day part swap.
Brown, rusty, or cloudy water from a softener that worked fine before.
Resin beads broken down or fouled with iron — flushing the resin tank or full softener resin replacement is the fix.
Low water pressure throughout the house — only after softener was installed.
Resin channelling, clogged distributor tube, or partially-closed bypass valve. Pressure restored after service.
Softener leaking water everywhere — basement water leak softener, soaked salt, drain line trickle.
Cracked control valve body, softener control valve leak, failed o-ring, brine tank overflow, or split bypass. Emergency priority — call now.
Just moved in — softener already in the new house but it's broken or no one knows the model.
We service every brand: Kenmore, Whirlpool, GE, EcoWater, North Star, Morton, Maytag, Culligan, Kinetico — even unbranded units. On-site diagnostic identifies make & model.
Salt mushing — wet salt sludge at the bottom of the brine tank that won't dissolve.
Cheap rock salt, humidity, or a stuck brine line. We clean out the mush, switch you to clean pellets, and reset the brine cycle so it actually draws.
Softener water doesn't feel right — water quality changed, soap is off, skin or hair feels different.
Wrong hardness setting, partial bypass, depleted resin or a clogged riser tube. We test water quality at the tap and recalibrate the softener.
Brine tank overflowing — water softener overflow rising above the salt level or spilling over the top.
Float / safety shut-off failed, drain line restriction, or stuck refill cycle. Stop adding salt, shut off the bypass, and call us.
Symptom doesn't match any of the above? On-site diagnostic finds the exact issue — you see the price and approve before any work starts.

Water Softener Repair Reviews from Ontario Customers
Real reviews from homeowners in Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Ottawa and across Ontario.
"Salt bridge — never even heard of that until the tech explained it. Tank looked full of salt but we hadn't had soft water in like 2 weeks. Came out next morning, broke it up and reset the timer, maybe 30 mins total. Got the price upfront, no upsell on a new unit either. Soft water by lunchtime. Mississauga"
"Came down to a flooded basement Tuesday morning, softener leaking from somewhere up top. Called these guys around 8am, tech was here before noon. Replaced the cracked head and a couple o-rings, walked us through the warranty before he left. Three weeks later, still dry. Hamilton"
"Old Kenmore unit just stopped doing its thing. Spots back on the glasses, soap not lathering for a couple weeks before I clued in. They replaced the timer board and bypass o-rings the same day. Written quote before any work, no hidden charges at the end. Toronto"
"Brown stuff coming out of the kitchen tap. Plumber told us we needed a whole new softener, quote was over $2k. Got a second opinion from Superior — turned out it was just iron-fouled resin. They replaced just the resin and flushed the brine tank. Saved us a fortune. Ottawa"
"EcoWater was leaking salt into the drinking water somehow — kids wouldn't touch it, dog either. Found a stuck brine valve, swapped it out and adjusted the hardness setting. Drinkable again same visit. Knew the EcoWater head better than I know my own car. Kitchener"
"15-year-old softener finally giving up on us. Most places would've pushed a $2500 new unit. These guys actually walked me through a repair option to buy another year while we sort out budget. Honest about what'd hold and what wouldn't. No upsell pressure at all. Mississauga"
